Why Are The Cocktails Called Cocktails?

November 10, 2021 blog-image

Truth be told, there is no clear-cut reference to the invention of cocktails in history. The idea or the notion of mixing alcoholic spirits with flavored juices, syrups, or liquors must have been born since the discovery of fermentation in the age of antiquity.

We’ve all been there. It’s evening, you’ve just worked an 18hour day, you’ve gotten into bed and are yearning for it to be the weekend so you grab a few cocktails and relax. You suddenly have that small voice in your brain, which only comes alive when you're too weary to function, just as the gift of sleep looks to be winging its way to your eyelids.

“Hey, hey don’t fall asleep yet! You might be so exhausted that you could cry, but you need to Google ‘why are cocktails called cocktails?” So it's off to the realm of dubious information and memes we go.

However, at any party, we would make things a little simpler for you by providing the solution to the query “why are cocktails called cocktails?” (because we’re nice like that, and we also worship at the sleep altar!)

Quite Simply said, most people agree with the story that an absolute legend of a guy. Pharmacists used to serve an extra dash of brandy with these bitters in the late 18th century. He would serve this dash of brandy in an eggcup which of course, in French are called coquetier. After a few too many of these cheeky little brandies and bitter combinations, the word "cocktay" evolved into the "cocktail" we know and love today. There are a couple of other theories; however, this one is our favorite and appears to be the most acknowledged!

What Makes A Good Cocktails?

Okay, so you’re now full of knowledge about the origins of the word “Cocktail” and your tired mind has drifted over to the question of “What makes a good cocktail?”.

You’d think that just having awesome tastes and flavors would be enough to create the finest cocktail in the world, but you’d be incorrect (sorry to disappoint). Cocktails are rather technical to create, which is why when you find a good one, they taste like genuine magic.

To create great cocktails, you need something called Tension - no, not the strange sensation when you can’t decide whether your work crush is interested in you. Tension in cocktail making exists in the balance between all the elements of the cocktail, such as sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness, the alcoholic strength, temperature, and texture.

Finding the balance between these elements and then putting in trendy or seasonal alcohol flavors, fruits and syrups are what makes Mixologists so genuinely skilled at their job.

Don’t fear though, if you’re wanting to experiment with different flavors and tastes of cocktails without being a Mixologist extraordinaire.
